BRAD TEARE
Born 1956 in Moscow, Idaho; lives in Providence, Utah

BRAD TEARE PAINTS WITH A KNIFE, building surfaces that hold light, movement, and stored energy. His landscapes of the American West feel less observed than lived—drawn from long days in the field and pushed further in the studio, where plein air studies become larger, more visceral works.

That approach traces back to a turning point in New York City. While working as an illustrator, Teare encountered Van Gogh’s paintings in person and was struck by their physical presence—the paint itself carrying deep emotion. He began working with thick paint and palette knives, eventually leaving illustration to return to the West and pursue landscape painting full-time.

Teare was raised in Kansas and later built a log cabin near Moscow Mountain in Idaho, an early expression of the independence that continues to shape his work. Today, he paints throughout Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico, often beginning on site before translating those experiences into larger studio paintings that retain the unpredictability and energy of direct observation.

He has attended residencies at the Maynard Dixon home in Utah and Trinchera Ranch in Colorado, exhibited at the Salmagundi Club and Forbes Galleries in New York, and received recognition from the American Impressionist Society and is a Signature Member. His work is regularly featured in sold-out shows at Quest for the West at the Eiteljorg Museum and has appeared in major publications, including Southwest Art, Western Art & Architecture, and International Artist.
