The Eiteljorg’s latest exhibition asks: How can artists spread new ideas and change society? For centuries, printmakers have created and shared urgent messages, reaching broad audiences with the rapid distribution of multiple printed images. The Consejo Grafico Nacional, an independent coalition of printmaking talleres (workshops), carries this work forward. Starting in 2000, the Consejo formed to advance the capacity and legacy of Latino printmakers (inclusive of all the Americas) in the United States.

Today, the Consejo artists reflect on cultural exchanges taking place between Latin America and the present-day United States. As we reconsider western American art at the Eiteljorg Museum, these artists remind us that the stories of the American West extend across North America’s borders.

This exhibition, Consejo Grafico Nacional: Latino Printmakers in the United States, opened May 30 and presents two distinct Consejo portfolios created collaboratively with printmakers at talleres in Chicago, Texas, California, New Jersey, New York and Puerto Rico. The portfolio La Huella Magistral: Homage to Master Printmakers recognizes the artists’ teachers: master printmakers who taught, mentored or inspired them. The portfolio Los Americans: Same = Different explores tensions of how American identity is defined across national borders.

Stories of connection

While each portfolio shares a central theme, the artists use a wide variety of printmaking techniques to create each individual image. “Printmaking” refers to the process of creating artwork through transferring ink from a template onto another surface, most often paper or fabric. This exhibition includes woodblock prints, linocuts, etchings, screenprints, lithographs and collagraphs — with multiple techniques sometimes combined in one print.

In addition to showcasing these printmaking portfolios in this exhibition, the Eiteljorg is also in the process of acquiring some of the prints for the museum’s permanent collection. They will be on view until spring 2027, allowing visitors to connect to these stories of cultural exchange between Latin America and the United States over the whole year.

¡Ya Abierto! Consejo Grafico Nacional: Grabadores Latinos en los Estados Unidos

La nueva exposición del Museo Eiteljorg pregunta: ¿Cómo pueden los artistas fomentar nuevas ideas y cambiar la sociedad? Durante siglos, los grabadores han creado y compartido mensajes urgentes. Distribuyendo múltiples imágenes impresas, logran alcanzar audiencias amplias de manera rápida. El Consejo Grafico Nacional, una coalición de talleres de grabado independiente lleva adelante esta tradición. Iniciando en el año 2000, el Consejo se formó para avanzar la capacidad y el legado de los grabadores latinos (incluyendo todas las américas) en los Estados Unidos.

Hoy, los artistas del Consejo reflexionan sobre los intercambios culturales que se han llevado a cabo entre latinoamérica y los actuales Estados Unidos. Mientras reconsideramos el arte del oeste americano en el Museo Eiteljorg, estos artistas nos recuerdan que las historias de la América Occidental extienden a través de las fronteras norteamericanas.

Esta exposición, que abrió el 30 de mayo, presenta dos portafolios distintos del Consejo creados en colaboración con grabadores en talleres ubicados en Chicago, Texas, California, Nueva Jersey, Nueva York y Puerto Rico. El portafolio titulado La Huella Magistral: Homenaje a los Maestros del Grabado reconoce a los maestros de los artistas: maestros grabadores que les enseñaron, guiaron o inspiraron. El portafolio Los Americans: Lo Mismo = Diferente explora las tensiones de cómo la identidad americana se define a través de las fronteras nacionales.

Historias de conexión

Aunque cada portafolio comparte un tema central, los artistas usan una gran variedad de técnicas de grabado para crear sus imágenes individuales. “El grabado” se refiere al proceso de crear obras de arte transfiriendo tinta de una plantilla a otra superficie, usualmente papel o tela. Esta exposición incluye xilografías, linograbados, aguafuertes, serigrafías, litografías y colagrafías; en algunos casos, varias técnicas se combinan en una misma obra.

Además de presentar estos portafolios de grabado en esta exposición, el Museo Eiteljorg también está en proceso de adquirirlos algunos de los grabados para la colección permanente del museo. Estarán en exposición hasta la primavera de 2027, brindando a los visitantes la oportunidad de conectar con estas historias de intercambio cultural entre latinoamérica y los Estado Unidos durante todo el año.
