Vice President of Curatorial Affairs and Collections

The Eiteljorg Museum is seeking a highly qualified and dynamic Vice President of Curatorial Affairs and Collections to lead and oversee all scholarly and curatorial aspects of the museum’s work. This pivotal role involves developing and implementing strategic initiatives that align with the museum’s mission, vision, and values. The Vice President will manage content research and development for exhibitions, publications, and educational programs, while also focusing on the acquisition, care, and management of the museum’s collections. Building strong relationships with collectors, donors, scholars, and institutions, this leader will engage in collaborative projects, presentations, and publications that enhance the museum’s reputation and impact in the fields of Western American and Native American art, history, and culture.

The ideal candidate will possess an advanced degree in Art History, Fine Art, or a relevant field, with over 10 years of experience in museum curatorial functions, including exhibition planning, collections management, and curatorial affairs. They should demonstrate in-depth knowledge of current museum trends and professional standards, strategic thinking, and the ability to lead and inspire diverse teams. Exceptional skills in collaboration, public speaking, budget management, and decision-making are essential. The Vice President will also ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards, particularly regarding the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. Experience in art or cultural museums, with a focus on the American West and Native American arts and cultures, is highly desirable. Job Description

Position title: Vice President of Curatorial Affairs and Collections
Reports to: President and CEO
Department: Curatorial
Status: Exempt

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

A. Curatorial Affairs: Oversee all scholarly aspects of the museum’s work including content research and development for exhibitions, publications, and support of education and public programs. Develop the museum collections to support the museum’s mission and exhibition needs, through long-range and strategic planning, building strong relationships with collectors and donors, and through strategic acquisitions and deaccessioning according to the collecting plan. Engage with other scholars, dealers, and institutions in the field of Western American and Native American art, history, and culture. Contribute to the field through collaborative projects, presentations, and publications.

B. Exhibition Development: Oversee permanent collection and temporary exhibition projects that advance the museum’s mission and engage its audiences. Support cross-cultural understanding and public education in arts, histories, and cultures of Native America and the American West. Direct the exploration of exhibition topics and content that reflect important scholarship and are compelling for museum audiences. Maintain a five-year calendar for exhibitions working in collaboration with other museum divisions including education and programs, development, marketing and communications, merchandising, finance, and facilities. Align exhibition planning with both curatorial objectives and the museum’s strategic and long-range plans. Create an exhibition proposal process that engages a cross-departmental team as well as any necessary external stakeholders in the planning process. Work with Education, Guest Services, and Advancement to ensure visitor studies and exhibition evaluations are conducted and effectively used to inform the planning process. Promote awareness and implementation of best practices for public exhibition and interpretation.

C. Collections Management and Stewardship: Provide oversight and direction for the management and care of the museum’s collection and ensure appropriate policies and procedures are adhered to by all museum staff. Lead the museum field in meeting and exceeding legal and ethical responsibilities, especially the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

D. Financial and Administrative Management: Provide overall financial and administrative supervision for the curatorial, collections, and exhibitions functions of the museum. Work with direct reports to develop an annual operating budget ensuring regular monitoring and reporting of expenditures to the Finance team. Develop long-range and strategic plans for these areas as well. Work with division staff, CEO, CFO, and legal counsel to ensure that legal matters, insurance, and regulatory requirements such as contracts, copyrights, and permissions are considered appropriately. Update division staff regarding changes to policies and procedures. Communicate the museum’s overall directions and objectives to staff, and help them align their individual work with the museum’s needs. Mentor staff prioritizing professional development opportunities when funding is available.

E. Engagement and Teamwork: Encourage collaboration between the division staff with other museum departments including advancement, operations, education, programs, and events. Foster cooperation and teamwork. Serve as a
member of the museum’s senior leadership team for strategic planning, budgeting, long-range planning, and management policy and practice. Participate in the Acquisition Committee and the board’s Collections Council and other board committees as needed. Support the museum’s development efforts in grant writing, donor development, and stewardship. Cultivate and steward a portfolio of donors. Support public programs and educational endeavors through scholarly counsel and direct interaction with the public. Support the President and CEO in achieving the museum’s objectives. Encourage effective participation of staff in planning, implementation, and evaluation of curatorial activities.

F. Leadership: Lead and direct the implementation of workplace culture programs that improve processes, communication, and collaboration in the division with the goal of establishing and maintaining a high-performing work environment characterized by professional excellence, strategic thinking, personal accountability, strong customer service, collegiality, and creative problem-solving. Recruit, mentor, develop, and successfully manage a team to achieve the strategic objectives and the present and future needs of the department in alignment with the museum’s annual priorities and strategic vision. Create a collaborative work environment by using a performance support process including goal setting, feedback, and development. Contribute to the creation and implementation of the museum’s strategic plans and to the development and effective communication of strategic goals, planning initiatives, policies, and resource allocations as related to the division’s core responsibilities.

G. Foster Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA): Promote and support IDEA initiatives through the Eiteljorg’s values, active listening, embracing differences, and engaging with empathy to create a culture of belonging among

    deaccessions, and exhibition organization, with a commitment to education and public engagement.
  • Experience in art or cultural museums. Knowledge of the art and history of the American West, and Native
    American Arts, Histories, and Cultures desirable.

Volunteer Coordinator

The Eiteljorg Museum is seeking a dynamic and strategic Volunteer Coordinator to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for recruiting, placing, and managing a diverse team of volunteers for both ongoing and special events. You will collaborate with various museum departments to identify volunteer opportunities that align with our organizational goals and volunteers’ interests. As a key player in our team, you will develop and maintain community partnerships, manage volunteer data, and ensure our volunteers are engaged and recognized. This position places a strong emphasis on diversity, equity, access, and inclusion (DEAI) in all aspects of volunteer management.

To be successful in this role, you should have proven experience in volunteering, working with, and/or managing volunteers. A Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience is required. Position title: Volunteer Coordinator
Reports to: Vice President of Public Programs
Department: Public Programs

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Recruit and place a robust and diverse team of volunteers for both ongoing and one-off programs and special events. Work with volunteers to identify opportunities that align with their interests and goals, ensuring a diverse and inclusive volunteer base.
• Collaborate with staff across museum departments to identify and evaluate volunteer opportunities. Ensure each department creates impactful and rewarding roles for volunteers, integrating DEAI principles into volunteer placements.
• Identify and continuously develop community partnerships with area service organizations, universities, and corporate volunteer groups. Represent the museum at local volunteer recruitment events, promoting inclusivity and diversity.
• Manage all aspects of volunteer administration, including processing applications, conducting background checks, and providing orientation for new volunteers. Maintain and update the volunteer database, prepare reports and schedules, and develop volunteer procedures and policies that reflect DEAI initiatives.
• Maintain regular communication (electronic, phone, and in-person) with volunteers to ensure they are engaged with the museum, feel supported in their role, and have the most up-to-date information regarding museum events and opportunities. Foster an inclusive environment where all volunteers feel valued and respected.
• Create ongoing appreciation opportunities and plan and implement an annual volunteer recognition event, celebrating the diverse contributions of volunteers.
• Work with the VP for Public Programs and the Beeler Family Director of Education to create and manage the volunteer budget annually, ensuring resources are allocated equitably.
• Work with the community engagement team to ensure the museum has a presence at local community fairs and events, promoting the museum’s commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion.

The Groundskeeper and General Facilities Technician at the Eiteljorg Museum plays a crucial role in maintaining the beauty and functionality of the museum’s grounds and facilities. This position is responsible for ensuring that the museum’s outdoor areas are well-maintained, aesthetically pleasing, and safe for visitors. Additionally, the role involves performing a variety of general maintenance tasks to support the smooth operation of the museum’s buildings and infrastructure.

Key responsibilities include landscaping, lawn care, and seasonal tasks such as snow removal. The Groundskeeper and General Facilities Technician will also assist with event setup and teardown, basic building repairs, and routine maintenance tasks. This role requires proficiency in using a range of landscaping and maintenance tools and equipment, as well as the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

A commitment to maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for visitors and staff is essential. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively. This position involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and requires physical stamina and the ability to perform manual labor.

By ensuring the highest standards of maintenance and presentation, the Groundskeeper and General Facilities Technician will contribute significantly to the overall visitor experience at the Eiteljorg Museum.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Landscaping and Grounds Maintenance: Safely and efficiently use landscaping tools for all aspects of grounds maintenance, including trimmers, blowers, edgers, power saws, and other assorted tools. Maintain the museum’s lawn care equipment and vehicles by fueling, oiling, and replacing major or minor parts. Maintain all service records in the Facilities CMMS. Routinely water plants, monitor, and maintain landscaped areas that require attention. Maintain the museum irrigation systems, making adjustments and repairs as necessary, including individual heads, major leaks, and time clock work.
  • Event Support: Assist the events manager in ensuring that rental events are properly set up, maintained, and torn down for rental or in-house events.
  • Housekeeping Support: Work with housekeeping staff as needed due to workload or team absence, with work assigned by the housekeeping task schedule.
  • Trash and Litter Removal: Remove trash and litter from the museum grounds and transport it to the proper disposal location using museum vehicles.
  • Snow Removal: Responsible for regular seasonal snow removal as necessary, utilizing manual tools and museum vehicles.
  • Building Maintenance: Assist with building maintenance, utilizing power saws, drills, hand tools, and other assorted tools and equipment to help with the upkeep of the building and preventative maintenance needs.
  • Supply Management: Keep track of all grounds supplies and report conditions or needs for re-ordering to the supervisor. This includes tools, ice melting agents, mower blades, belts, weed control chemicals, etc.
  • Additional Duties: Perform all other duties as assigned by Facilities team leadership. Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • Special Events: Work the Annual Indian Market and Festival on the 4th weekend of June, and other special events as assigned.

Volunteer Coordination: Lead volunteers as needed to help with landscaping and gardening.
