Remembering John
The Eiteljorg Museum mourns the passing of John Vanausdall, a visionary leader who served as president and CEO for nearly 27 years. A self-proclaimed generalist with a deep passion for design and inclusivity, John prioritized the museum’s financial stability and spearheaded two major capital campaigns that greatly expanded the museum’s physical space and revitalized its galleries. His commitment to inclusivity led to the creation of groundbreaking exhibitions, such as In the Presence of the Past: The Miami Indians of Indiana, Americanos: Latino Life in the United States, and many more, establishing the Eiteljorg as a leader in diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusivity—accomplishments he held with great pride.
John’s legacy extends beyond his leadership; he was instrumental in cultivating deep relationships with donors, securing invaluable art collections that have significantly enriched the museum’s offerings. His ability to personally engage with donors and his relentless dedication to fostering these relationships resulted in enduring contributions to the museum. The Eiteljorg community remembers John not only for his professional achievements but also for his warmth, vision, and lasting impact on the museum and the broader arts community.
In honor of John’s life and dedication to the Eiteljorg, we invite you to submit a memory or message celebrating his legacy. Additionally, in recognition of his passion for the museum’s growth, you can donate in John’s memory to the Eiteljorg Museum’s John Vanausdall Capital Improvement Endowed Fund. Your contributions will continue the work John cared so deeply about.
Please submit any memories, condolences, or messages you would like shared with the family.
