Spirit & Place: Sovereign Sustenance: Indigenous Food Sovereignty Talk and Cooking Demo

November 3, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join Mariah Gladstone (Blackfeet / Cherokee), chef and founder of Indigikitchen, for a talk about the significance of Indigenous food sovereignty. Food is necessary, both literally and figuratively, to nourish our minds, souls, and bodies. Food is intrinsically tied to identity and cultural self-expression. Recent revitalization efforts around Indigenous food sovereignty is allowing Native peoples to connect deeply to their cultural practices that were nearly lost, while also addressing issues like food insecurity and food deserts. Those gathered for the event will have a chance to hear Blackfeet/Cherokee chef Mariah Gladstone discuss Indigenous food sovereignty and how food can be used as a form of resistance against colonization all while cooking Indigenous food recipes that the audience will be able to sample.

Gladstone will conduct a cooking demonstration with Indigenous recipes, which attendees will have a chance to sample. Also, Felica Ahasteen-Bryant (Diné), director of the Native American Educational and Cultural Center (NAECC) at Purdue University, will discuss local Indigenous food sovereignty efforts. Dani Tippmann, community food program director for the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, also will speak. Event is free, but attendees should pre-register through Eventbrite.
