Western Art Collection

Honoring the Spirit of Bold Western Artists

The Western Art Collection contains some of the most meaningful Western art in existence today. With art spanning two centuries, the range of the collection makes it exceptional. Established with the personal collection of museum founder Harrison Eiteljorg, the museum’s Western art collection has grown thanks in large part to gifts from George Gund, Kenneth “Bud” Adams, and other significant collectors.

More About This Collection

George Gund Collection

In 2002, the collection expanded exponentially due to the generosity of George Gund. His donation includes significant paintings and bronzes by Frederic Remington and Charles Russel. Gordon Gund, son of George Gund, described the motivation of George Gund and his lasting impact on America’s Western art history.

“In the spirit of the intrepid artists who ventured West seeking material for their paintings, sculptures, and prints, it had been our father’s wish – and now ours – to share the collection with thousands of Americans who otherwise might not have the opportunity to see the great art of this significant era in American history.”

Titan of the West

Kenneth ‘Bud’ Adams, the former owner of the Tennessee Titans football franchise, bequeathed one of the largest and most historically important donations to date. The exhibition ‘Titan of the West: The Adams Collection of Western and Native Art’ contains striking paintings by Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, Thomas Moran, and other artists who shaped the image of the Old West. With artifacts 1,500 years old, visitors who see the collection will understand the significance, struggle, and beauty of life in the West.
