Snow Days

Nov 5, 2022 – Feb. 5, 2023

For many, winter is a time to tell stories during long nights, gather with loved ones and celebrate important traditions. Artwork in the exhibition will explore all of these aspects of winter and more

In Snow Days, winter adds layers of beauty
to surroundings

Snow Days features works from the museum’s permanent collection that highlight winter and snowy environs. With objects ranging from delicate carved ivory miniatures of sled dogs to snowy Western landscapes to exquisitely beaded mittens designed to protect the wearer from the cold, the exhibit will highlight works that embrace the beauty of the season and the ingenuity it takes to survive it.

For many people, including artists, winter means more time spent inside to work on their art, such as preparing furs into gloves and mukluks before beading floral patterns onto them. These essential items keep the wearer warm (as well as fashionable) in frigid sub-Arctic and Arctic conditions. The winter-wear examples in the exhibition are beautifully embellished, showcasing the skill and creativity of their artists.

Do you have traditions that are unique to winter? Favorite hobbies or activities you spend time with during the season? While you experience the exhibit, we invite you to think about your own families, friends, and communities, and what winter means to you.
