Leon Jett Memorial Lecture with Dr. Kyle T. Mays (Saginaw Chippewa)

February 16, 2023 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Join Dr. Kyle T. Mays (Saginaw Chippewa), author and Assistant Professor of African American Studies and American Indian Studies and History at UCLA, for an important discussion about hip-hop music by Native artists. Dr. Mays is the author of Hip Hop Beats, Indigenous Rhymes: Modernity and Hip Hop in Indigenous North America (2018), An Afro-Indigenous History of the United States (2021), and City of Dispossessions: Indigenous Peoples, African Americans, and the Creation of Modern Detroit (2022).

His work explores three questions: What is the relationship between blackness and indigeneity? How does dispossession in cities shape the lives of Black and Indigenous peoples? How can we imagine and put into praxis a world in the aftermath of settler colonialism and white supremacy?

Following the lecture will be a book-signing and a chance for guests to meet Dr. Mays.

In honor of former Public Programs manager Leon Jett, admission to this program has been discounted. Leon Jett sought to elevate multicultural programming at the museum, and this series was created to continue his mission.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the event will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Registration is required for this event and walk-ins are welcome unless the event sells out ahead of time. The cost is $15 non-members, $10 members. A cash bar will be available, along with light hors d’oeuvres. One drink ticket is included with purchase.
