DESCRIPTION:David Martin is a Pokagon Band Potawatomi living in South Bend\, IN. Born in 1973\, he was raised in a traditional Native American home. He started dancing and singing at powwows in his preteen years\, traveling across the country with his family’s drum group\, White Thunder\, now called Ribbon Town. His interest in art started as soon as he was able to hold a pencil\, and was encouraged by family and mentors to pursue his art. In 1996\, he was introduced to tattooing\, and it allowed him an income in an art-based business while working on his painting skills. Today\, he enjoys oil painting as modern contemporary Native American artist. Over the course of five decades\, a lone graverobber accumulated an illicit trove of over 42\,000 artifacts from cultures across the globe\, including Native American\, Haitian\, Chinese\, and others. The stolen items included nearly 500 ancestral remains\, carefully looted from sacred burial sites and cultural heritage locations. Carpenter’s team\, driven by an unwavering commitment to justice\, embarks on a harrowing journey to track down this elusive criminal and uncover the full scope of the theft. What they find is nothing short of staggering: an illegal collection of immense historical and cultural significance\, hidden away in a Midwestern home. \nPart true crime narrative\, part procedural\, The Grave Robber offers a gripping\, behind-the-scenes look at the meticulous work involved in tracking down one of the most prolific art thieves in history. Carpenter also led the Art Crime Team for nearly 6 years\, and was the first member of the team promoted from within to lead it. He is a former bomb technician and police officer and served nearly twelve years in the US Air Force and Air Force Reserve as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician. \nCarpenter is frequently sought after for interviews and feature pieces\, and has conducted more than 100 interviews for television\, print\, radio\, podcasts\, and online formats. He has been featured in Vanity Fair\, the Washington Post Magazine\, on NPR\, CBS\, and more. He has also served as a speaker\, lecturer and panelist at a variety of prestigious venues\, including Congress\, the Smithsonian\, and George Washington University Law School. \nCarpenter started and led the FBI’s largest recovery of stolen and looted cultural property in the Bureau’s history during the landmark Don Miller case. The case marked a turning point for how the FBI approaches sensitive cultural matters\, particularly related to Native American tribes. For his efforts in the repatriation process of ancestral remains and historic objects\, Carpenter received the Public Service Award from the Society for American Archeology. Performances by Native Pride Productions include different types of powwow dances\, storytelling and live music. Admission is free. \nNative Pride Productions\, an award-winning dance collective led by founder and artistic director Larry Yazzie (Meskwaki) will showcase several types of powwow dances and storytelling sessions throughout the day\, including Fancy Dance\, Grass Dance\, Jingle Dress dances\, and more. This new book brings together personal stories that explore deep-rooted relationships\, cultural reconnections\, and the enduring legacy of the Indigenous makers whose artistry continues to inspire today. \nThanks to a generous grant from Lilly Endowment Inc.\, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art acquired the Richard Pohrt Jr. Collection in 2018. This extraordinary collection features cultural belongings from tribal nations of the Great Lakes region. These works embody the innovation\, beauty\, and profound knowledge of Indigenous artists whose creativity was shaped by the land and lifeways of their ancestors. \nIn the Company of Our Relatives is not a traditional academic study. Instead\, it is a vibrant tapestry of voices from Native descendants of the original makers\, offering reflections that are deeply personal and rooted in oral traditions. Each essay was edited with care not to revise\, but to honor and preserve the integrity of each contributor’s voice. Together\, these stories offer a rare and intimate glimpse into the living relationships between Indigenous people and their ancestral belongings. \nThis project began with prayer and intention\, guided by the understanding that these belongings are not mere artifacts. They are relatives—vessels of gikendaasowin (knowledge) and expressions of Anishinaabe Indendamowin (ways of living). A variety of indoor and outdoor activities will be offered throughout the week. \nRegistration deadline: June 30\, 2025 \nOpen to campers aged 9 to 11. Registration can be canceled for a full refund no later than Friday\, June 13\, 2025. Registrations canceled after June 13\, 2025 will not be refunded. \nCamp Hours and Aftercare: \nCamp runs daily from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Campers may arrive between 8:30 & 9 a.m. and can be picked up between 4 and 4:30 p.m. \nLunch and Snacks for Camp: \nCampers should bring a sack lunch\, 2 snacks\, a water bottle\, and wear closed-toed shoes.
