SUMMARY:Greenlawn Cemetery Documentary Trailer Screening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Attend a free trailer screening & panel discussion of the Greenlawn Cemetery documentary with Indy Dept. of Public Works & Studio Auteur \nThe Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW)\, in collaboration with local filmmakers Studio Auteur\, an Indianapolis based content creation company\, is releasing the official trailer for an upcoming documentary chronicling the historic Greenlawn Cemetery excavation conducted as part of the Henry Street Bridge Project. \nThe documentary captures one of Indianapolis’ most significant archaeological undertakings to date\, documenting the excavation\, research\, and interpretation of early city residents buried across two of the four historic cemeteries collectively known as Greenlawn Cemetery. As infrastructure improvements advance along the river corridor\, archaeological teams have worked meticulously to recover and interpret the stories of individuals whose histories form the foundation of the city’s early development. \nProduced and directed by filmmaker Jerald Harkness of Studio Auteur\, the project offers an intimate look into the unfolding discoveries\, the scientific and ethical considerations guiding the excavation\, and the collaborative efforts of archaeologists\, City of Indianapolis employees\, and Community Advisory Group members. The trailer provides the public with its first glimpse into the narrative arc of the film\, which aims to illuminate the lived experiences of early Indianapolis communities and the long-overlooked histories represented within Greenlawn Cemetery. \nIndy DPW is hosting two public programs which will feature a screening of the documentary trailer followed by a panel discussion with the filmmaker\, archaeologists who directed the excavation\, and representatives from the Community Advisory Group. These programs invite the community to engage directly with the film\, ask questions\, and reflect on how this work contributes to a more complete understanding of Indianapolis’ past. \nThe full documentary release date has not yet been finalized\, as analysis of the recovered remains and artifacts is ongoing. Indy DPW anticipates completion after research and analysis phases are concluded to ensure the film presents a responsible and complete account of the excavation’s findings. \nFollow the project website for additional announcements regarding the project and documentary: https://wridinfrastructure.com. \nRegister

DESCRIPTION:Discover Indiana’s vibrant Latino art community at the Eiteljorg Museum during AHORA! This exciting biennial showcase brings together artists\, designers\, and creatives from Indiana for a celebration of Latino visual arts. Visitors can enjoy meeting and purchasing work from artist vendors\, a pop-up art gallery\, and artist talks at 11:30am and 2:30pm. Also\, make sure to visit the exhibition Connected by Heritage by Indy Latina Artists at the community gallery.   \nThis year\, hear from multifaceted artist\, muralist\, gallery owner\, and journalist Joy Hernandez. With an appreciation for cartoons\, comics\, science fiction\, and pop culture\, Joy has built a career around a distinctive art practice that blends pop surrealism and graffiti aesthetics. With her familiar character Bean the Astronaut\, Joy has painted the town all around Indiana and Australia telling stories of his adventures skateboarding in halfpipes to being abducted by aliens in space.   \nAdditionally\, Joy’s contributions to Indy’s arts scene extend beyond her mural work with a studio space and art gallery inside the Factory Arts District building. Participating in monthly First Friday openings\, Joy opens her studio space to immerse visitors and patrons into her vibrant and colorful world. Joy also served as the final president of the Indianapolis Downtown Artists & Dealers Association\, better known as IDADA\, which was the organization that founded the monthly First Friday art tours.   \nListen to Joy discuss building her successful art career around a full time job as a photojournalist. She’ll share insights into how she integrates creativity in her work behind the camera and her work in front of a wall while avoiding burnout. Join Joy during one of two sessions at 11:30am and 2:30pm with a brief Q&A following each session.  \nSome of Joy’s accolades include becoming a Creative Renewal Arts Fellow in the 2024-2025 cohort of the program which allowed her to travel to Mexico City. In 2023 Joy was awarded first place by the Society of Professional Journalists for her work in the WishTV special news story\, The Living Truth: The Emmett Till Story. That same story was also nominated for an Emmy Award by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). Additionally\, Joy’s artwork was recognized Best in Show during the 2022 Flava Fresh series.  \nJoy is currently working on a mural for the 500 Festival which will be unveiled in May leading up to the Indy 500. She is also working on a project in collaboration with the City of Cumberland. In late June\, Joy will lead an important project for collaborative work in Wisconsin.  \nThis event is brought to you by Indiana Mexican Latino Artist Network\, an initiative of Arte Mexicano en Indiana through the generous support of the Indy Arts Council\, Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation\, Glick Philanthropies\, Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust\, Herbert Simon Family Foundation\, and the Eiteljorg Museum.  \nWe also want to thank our community partners AIGA Indianapolis\, Latinos Indy\, The Mind Trust\, Indy Latina Artists\, Herron School of Art and Design\, WE Brunch\, and Indiana Latino Arts for their support.  \nThe event is included with paid museum admission. Free parking with museum validation.  \nFree to high school students and Indiana college students with school ID.

SUMMARY:Leon Jett Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this year’s Leon Jett Memorial Lecture\, honoring the legacy of Leon Jett\, the Eiteljorg Museum’s public programs manager from 1999 to 2007. Leon’s passion for inclusive programming ensured that every visitor to the museum could see themselves reflected in its art\, exhibitions\, and events. This annual lecture continues his mission by spotlighting the often-overlooked stories of historical and contemporary African Americans in the West. \nThis year\, we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Timothy E. Nelson\, a historian\, author\, professor\, and artist. Providing the most in-depth research on Blackdom to date\, he reframes the history\, focusing on the economic and social ambitions of Afro-Frontierists (Black pioneers). Dr. Nelson is digitally applying his theory of colonization within the digital frontier through various art forms\, including academic books\, trade books\, screenplays\, painting\, photography\, and videography. https://afrofrontier.com/ \nMany believed that Blackdom was simply abandoned. However\, new evidence shows that the scheme to build generational wealth continued to exist throughout the twentieth century in other forms. During Blackdom’s boomtimes\, in December 1919\, Blackdom Oil Company shifted town business from a regenerative agricultural community to a more extractive model. Nelson has uncovered new primary source materials that suggest for Blackdom a newly discovered third decade. This story has never been fully told or contextualized until now. \nReoriented to Mexico’s “northern frontier\,” one observes Black ministers\, Black military personnel\, and Black freemasons who colonized as part of the transmogrification of Indigenous spaces into the American West. Nelson’s concept of the Afro-Frontier evokes a “Turnerian West\,” but it is also fruitfully understood as a Weberian “Borderland.” Its history highlights a brief period and space that nurtured Black cowboy culture. While Blackdom’s civic presence was not lengthy\, its significance—and that of the Afro-Frontier—is an important window in the history of Afrotopias\, Black Consciousness\, and the notion of an American West. \nA book signing will immediately follow the talk and this discussion is included with the price of admission. All Indiana college\, university and trade school students receive FREE admission with their school ID. \nRSVP
