SUMMARY:Niibidoon “Weave It” 2026 Great Lakes Art Convening
DESCRIPTION:With a generous grant from Lilly Endowment Inc.\, the Richard Pohrt Jr. Collection was acquired by the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in 2018. This collection is a treasure that underscores the artistic and innovative brilliance of Indigenous artists and makers who were shaped by the landscape of the Great Lakes region. As stewards of the Richard Pohrt Jr. Collection\, along with the entire Native American collection housed at the Eiteljorg\, we support the perpetuation of supporting the descendants of the makers in creating space for Indigenous artist and culture bearers to share their stories and talents while being in community with each other. Niibidoon “Weave It” 2026 Great Lakes Art Convening is a gathering centered around the traditional weaving practices of the Indigenous peoples of the Great Lakes and a time to be in the company of our relatives as they are not merely objects but vessels of gikendaasowin (knowledge) that remain at the heart of Anishinaabe Indendamowin (ways of living). SUMMARY:Open Studio with Artist in Residence Carrie McCleary
DESCRIPTION:Carrie Moran McCleary is a fashion designer\, beader\, and doll maker from the Little Shell Chippewa Tribe. She lives on the Crow Reservation in Montana. In 2016\, she founded Plains Soul to share her unique style and artistry with a wider audience. Moran McCleary is known for Indigenizing everyday items\, transforming thrift-store finds and hand-me-downs into works of art that express her identity. Taught by her mothers to bead and sew\, she then developed her own style that infuses traditional practices with contemporary design. \nA 2022 First Peoples Fund Artist in Business Leadership Fellow and two-time recipient of the Montana Indian Equity Grant\, Moran McCleary recently built her own studio and retail space using these funds\, furthering her commitment to creative entrepreneurship.\nPlains Soul fashions have been featured at Native Fashion in the City\, Honour Our Legacy Fashion Show\, Big Sky IndigiFest and Fashion Gala\, Montana Folk Festival Fashion Show\, and numerous community shows at local schools and fundraising events. \nMoran McCleary was previously a member of the b.Yellowtail Collective\, where she sold her Fierce One Doll Collection. Her beadwork has been exhibited widely in venues such as The Brinton Museum\, Emerson Art Center\, Chicago Field Museum\, Museum of the Rockies\, Yellowstone County Museum\, Carnegie Museum\, Missoula Art Museum\, and the Tribal Heritage Center at Yellowstone National Park. SUMMARY:Textile Workshop with Artist in Residence Carrie McCleary
DESCRIPTION:Little Shell Chippewa textile artist Carrie McCleary will teach a textile workshop to participants! \nParticipants will learn about appropriation and inspiration in fashion and art\, then explore the Expressions of Life: Native Art in North America gallery\, creating sketches to apply in the studio upcycling a jacket or hoodie using print blocks\, paint\, embroidery and accessories to update their wardrobe. It is encouraged to bring in a hoodie or jacket that you would like to decorate. If you don’t have a piece of clothing that you’d like to bring in\, you can create a make and take patch that you can later add to a piece of clothing. \nNo experience necessary. All supplies will be provided. This workshop is best for people ages 15+. \nParking is free on a first come\, first serve basis in the White River State Parking Garage. Proof of membership required at the door. \nNo refunds will be given. DESCRIPTION:Homeschool families are invited to enjoy a day of exploration\, learning\, and hands-on activities inspired by the Eiteljorg Museum’s collections and exhibitions. \nArtist-in-Residence Susan Charlesworth (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma) will be joining us\, offering hands-on experiences and sharing her work as an award-winning basket weaver while giving learners a closer look at the creative process behind her baskets. \nArtist Bio: Susan Locke Charlesworth is an award-winning basket weaver whose work has been featured in several exhibitions and museums\, including Butler University and the Choctaw Nation Tuskahoma Capitol Museum in Tuskahoma\, OK.  \nAs the great niece of Victor M. Locke\, Jr.\, Principal Chief of the Choctaw Nation from 1910-1918\, Susan first began weaving in 2005 as a way to explore and connect with her cultural heritage. That same year\, she entered her first baskets in the Choctaw Nation Annual Labor Day Festival and Art Show. Susan has continued to receive awards at multiple Native art markets\, including the Eiteljorg Indian Market & Festival\, the Art Under Oak’s Art Show\, and the Choctaw National Art Show.  \nOriginally from Chicago\, Susan is a Butler University alumna\, retired CAN\, and social service consultant with a master’s degree in social work. She is also an avid volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association and now serves as an Alzheimer’s Association Community Educator in Indianapolis.  \nRegister
