Member-only Coffee & Conversation with artist Bobby Silas
November 19 @ 9:00 am - 10:00 am
Join artist in residence Bobby Silas, a potter reviving ancient designs in his contemporary work. Bobby began his pottery journey in 2004-5 at Zuni High School, where he learned traditional Zuni techniques. Though Hopi by heritage, he embraced Zuni methods, which led to a decade-long partnership with his late partner, Timothy Edaakie.
Bobby credits his godfather, Kevin Navasie, for teaching him Hopi pottery. His focus is on reviving the ancient Sikyatki pottery (1100-1600), using lignite coal firing, a method he revived in 2015. His award-winning pieces, inspired by Sikyatki polychrome and Jeddito black-on-yellow pottery, are hand-coiled, painted with native clay slips, and adorned with a bee-weed plant variant.
