The Eiteljorg's Native American art and artifacts
come from all regions of North America, from the Southeast to
the Arctic. The collection is particularly rich in objects from
the Plains and Southwest, with a sampling of pieces from almost
every tribal group. Many of the artifacts come from the Museum
of Indian Heritage, formerly located at Indianapolis' Eagle Creek
Park.
The
Eiteljorg assumed the holdings of that museum in 1989, adding
hundreds of Native American artifacts to the Eiteljorg's collection.
The Eiteljorg exhibits many familiar Native American items — totem,
tipi and feathered headdress — as well as pottery, jewelry,
clothing and baskets. Visitors to the Art of Native
America Collection quickly realize that there is no
one item that represents all Native peoples, just as there is
no single "Native American." Artifacts on display
illustrate the artistic and cultural diversity of America's
first peoples.
