Eiteljorg Fellowship for Narive American Fine Art

The Eiteljorg Fellowship for Native American Art program has awarded over $500,000 in unrestricted grants and added more than 125 pieces of art by 24 Native American fine artists to its permanent collection over the last 8 years. The museum’s commitment to Native American fine art includes publishing a catalog with each exhibition and hosting a symposium. It is our goal to be a platform for the voice of Native artists, art historians and scholars. We invite visitors, to our website to experience the art of each of our past awardees and to celebrate the 2007 recipients when they are chosen.

History

In 1999, with the generous support of Lilly Endowment, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis inaugurated the Eiteljorg Fellowship for Native American Fine Art. This biennial program, developed by the museum in consultation with its board and its Native American Council, culminates in an exhibition that honors a distinguished artist and five contemporary fine artists whose achievements warrant meritorious recognition. Each of the five fellows, who are selected by an independent jury, receives an unrestricted $20,000 honorarium to facilitate their continued growth as creative artists. In addition, the Eiteljorg purchases significant work by each artist for its outstanding permanent collection of contemporary Native American art. The Eiteljorg also publishes a catalog written by Native American fine art historians for each exhibition.
